Title: Opened December 26, 1838. (From "The Atlas" Newspaper, December 29, 1838)
Description: C. Whiting Printer, 1838. Two sided broadsheet, 425 x 280 mm. old folds, tears along the central fold with no loss. This item may have at some time been mounted and will bear traces on the reverse of adhesive or removal of mounts. In 1834, the London and Westminster Bank was the first firm founded under the auspices of the Bank Charter Act 1833, which allowed joint-stock banks to be established in the capital. For various reasons, the press, private banking concerns, and the Bank of England were so hostile to the Bank Charter Act that London and Westminster's management was primarily concerned with defending the company's right to exist rather than setting up an extensive branch network. The history of the bank's first few years is outlined on this broadside issued at the time of the opening of its headquarters, designed by Charles Robert Cockerell and William Tite> a curious appointment in view of the antipathy of the Bank of England at the time as Cockerell was the bank's surveyor, replacing Sir John Soane who had retired in 1833.
