Description: Westminster Bridge Office, 1762 - 63. Small 8vo. pp. 76. Original marbled wrappers, front detached. A Manuscript record of commissioners and officers> record of meetings, finances and details of works. The small manuscript notebook contains a list of Commissioners, 64 in all, including many leading members of the nobility and city merchants. Mostly devoted to the repaving of various streets including the minutiae of dimensions, costs with calculations for the quantity of Edinburgh stones [sandstone?] required to pave them, carried out by George Wyatt, surveyor, and Mr Campbell [of Edinburgh]. The total cost for paving both Parliament and York Streets being £1,626 13s. Some of the records consisting of enquiring about craft to bring the stones from Scotch wharf to Westminster, and where to put the stones once delivered, advertising for the selling of old stones, etc. Wages for paviours [persons who lay paving stones]: "Geo. Young agreed at 1/8 a week and Jn. McCarter 1/7 and a pint of beer each day, and if Young behaved well is to have a further Gratuity..." "Large rammer to be provided and to ram York Street when finished." "Surveyor acquainted the Commrs. that the Scotch Paviours do more work by a 6th or 7th than the English. The English Paviours had been directed to work in the same manner as the Scotch, but had refused so to do." Details and contracts for lamps and other ironwork for the streets, etc.
