This item may have at some time been mounted and will bear traces on the reverse of adhesive or removal of mounts. Reuben May, a Baptist preacher, founded the Mission to help the poor unemployed in around 1867, soliciting subscriptions and "left-off clothes." He was also involved in organising meetings and processions of the unemployed. He was not without controversy and although he continued to feed and clothe the unemployed there were frequent entreaties in national newspaper not to donate to his causes until his accounts had been audited. It is highly likely that the establishment feared his influence among the poor and disenfranchised, and his involvement with the Workingmen's Committee of Unemployed, rather than any genuine concern for malfeasance.
