Title: Order of Proceedings at the Re-opening of the Collegiate Church of St. Saviour (St. Marie Overie), Southwark, on Tuesday, February 16th, 1897, when there will be present H.R.H. The Prince of Wales.
Description: The Diocese, 1897. Souvenir booklet, 285 x 220 mm. 20 pages, silk ties. This item may have at some time been mounted and will bear traces on the reverse of adhesive or removal of mounts. "...considered the finest medieval building in London after Westminster Abbey." The nave, having been demolished to within seven feet of the ground was rebuilt in unsympathetic manner in 1839. The new nave was at a higher level than the surviving mediaeval eastern part, and closed off from it by a glazed screen. It had a plaster vault carried on iron columns, and a wooden gallery around three sides. It was widely criticised, notably by Pugin who wrote "It is bad enough to see such an erection spring up at all, but when a venerable building is demolished to make way for it, the case is quite intolerable...the nave was once again rebuilt between 1890 and 1897 by Arthur Blomfield, in a manner intended to recreate its 13th-century predecessor as accurately as possible, and to preserve the few surviving mediaeval fragments." Southwark Cathedral in Bell's Cathedral Series. This rebuilding and a restoration of the remainder of the fabric of the church was completed in 1897. It was designated a cathedral in 1905 with the creation of the Diocese of Southwark.
