Title: To the Gate-Keepers at the St. Katherine Docks. Permit 1 Lady to pass into the Docks and afterwards quit the same.
Description: 1 December 1836. Ticket, printed and manuscript on grey paper, 70 x 90 mm. laid down. St Katherine Docks, constructed from 1827 was the only major project by Thomas Telford in London. It necessitated the demolition of the medieval hospital of St. Katherine and around 1,250 homes, displacing over 11,000 inhabitants, none of whom unless property owners, received compensation. This is a curious ticket as the printed section reads Permit ___ Lad ___ offering the alternative for either lad or lady to access the docks and should have been delivered up to the gatekeeper on leaving the docks, though I can't imagine why a lady might want to visit the docks.
