Description: Florence: Tip. Galletti e Cocci, 26 December 1876. Handbill, 235 x 155 mm. This item may have at some time been mounted and will bear traces on the reverse of adhesive or removal of mounts. Paul Boyton [1848 - 1924], born in Rathangan, Co. Kildare, was named "The Fearless Frogman" for his life-saving rubber suit, in effect an inflatable dry-suit which allowed the wear to float on their back and paddle like a kayak. He demonstrated this apparatus by crossing the Channel, paddling hundreds of miles up the Rhine, Danube, Canals of Venice, the Straits of Gibraltar and the Mississippi. He later formed an aquatic circus, briefly joining Barnum, but later establishing the first permanent amusement park in Chicago.
