Title: Annual Celebration in Honour of the 93d Anniversary of American Independence at Tammany Hall. William M. Tweed, Grand Sachem.
Description: New York, Tammany Society, or Columbian Order, 1869. Bifolium, printed in blue and red to 1st and third pages, 205 x 125 mm. With election card for John T. Hoffman for Mayor [of New York] pasted to inner page. A little torn. This item may have at some time been mounted and will bear traces on the reverse of adhesive or removal of mounts. William "Boss" Tweed was the head of Tammany Hall, a Democratic political machine which held great sway in New York in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. He was a member of the House of Representatives and the NY State Senate, but more importantly was a member of a number of local boards and commissions. It is estimated that he stole between 25 and 45 million dollars from New York City taxpayers as a result of political corruption by the notorious "Tweed Ring", although later estimates have put it as high as $200 million. He was eventually prosecuted and jailed, dying in Ludlow Street jail of severe pneumonia in 1878. John T. Hoffman was Mayor of New York [1866 - 68] and Governor of the State of New York [1869 - 72] but his association with Tweed ruined his reputation and he held no further public office. This brochure was issued just prior to Tweed's downfall in 1871.
