Title: Jupiter and Saturn.
Description: 1868. A pair of hand-made hold-to-light cards showing the planets Jupiter and Saturn, each 75 x 110 mm. with label "Made by Papa 1868." The tissues in both cases is a little torn but with no loss. From the 1820s various publishers produced star charts, mostly astrological, to show the positions of the stars in see through cards. These hand-made cards are most unusual showing two of the major planets with their attendant moons. In Saturn's case, the planet and rings are cut out and filled with tissue, inked to show bands and 8 pin holes show the moons known at the time> subsequently a further 5 large moons some 70 smaller moons have been observed. Jupiter is shown as heavily banded and 4 moons are shown> a fifth was discovered in 1892, and a further 8 by the Voyager 1 fly-by in 1979.
