Title: Allsopp's Pale or Bitter Ale. Remarks upon the alleged use of Strychnine in the Manufacture of Pale Ale.
Description: Burton on Trent: Allsopp and Sons, 1852. 8vo. pp 8. No wrappers, as issued? This item may have at some time been mounted and will bear traces on the reverse of adhesive or removal of mounts. Baron Liebig [1803 - 73] is regarded to be the father of organic chemistry, this pamphlet published by Allsopp and Sons "in consequence of the reported adulteration" of their beers. The pamphlet goes on to list extracts from testimonials from "the most eminent medical men... throughout the country". Liebig pioneered the production of 'meat tea', eventually marketed as Oxo, and his discovery that yeast could be concentrated led to the invention of Marmite. This pamphlet is only recorded at the Welcome library in the U.K., though it was likely issued to be inserted into magazines of the time.
