Title: Card for Preliminary Examination at the Royal College of Surgeons in the name of Henry Clarke, 1872. [and] letter by Clarke to his future father in law from Wakefield Prison, 1877.
Description: 1872 & 1877. Small card, 80 x 140 mm. The letter addressed to his future father in law, asking for his daughter Louisa's hand in marriage and setting out his financial details and prospects. This item may have at some time been mounted and will bear traces on the reverse of adhesive or removal of mounts. Clarke was appointed surgeon at Wakefield prison in 1776 and remained there for 30 years. His salary as stated in the letter "is £400 a year which with house, coals, gas and other emoluments is equal to at least £600 in private practice."
