Title: Album of Photographs from the Driefontein Gold Mine.
Description: Witwatersrand, South Africa, 1938. Oblong 4to. 48 photographs, each c. 150 x 200 mm. Padded leather album, front cover detached. The Driefontein Gold Mine was established after a survey made in 1937 and at one time was the largest gold mine on the continent of Africa> the current owners intend to cease production within the next ten years as the deep mining techniques become less profitable. This album contains a unique record of its earliest days with a combination of surface machinery and buildings [7 images] and underground photographs [41], mostly of men at work or posed portraits in situ at the workings showing the often cramped and dangerous conditions to which the workforce was subjected.
