Description: Bideford: Wilson, printer and bookbinder, 1849. Broadside, 425 x 285 mm. Creased and frayed, woodcut illustration at the head. This item may have at some time been mounted and will bear traces on the reverse of adhesive or removal of mounts. Torrington Commons was gifted to the poor of Torrington forever by Baron Fitz-Robert in the time of James the first according to this poem, but actually given in the late 12th century. Like many areas of common land, an attempt was made in the nineteenth century to enclose the Commons but was subsequently refused by the Commissioners due to the gift in perpetuity. It is now administered by an 1889 Act of Parliament by a 'Committee of Conservators.' This long poem celebrates the victory of the common people over the landed gentry. No locations traced.
