Title: This is to give Notice, to all Gentlemen, Ladies and Others, That there is to be Seen, at the...The Electrical Machine, which shows the surprising power of Electricity, by a series of Experiments more than ever were exhibited to Publick, by any apparatus yet extant...
Description: [London?]: no publisher, c. 1760. Handbill notice, single sheet, 120 x 175 mm, worn and rubbed, small hole to bottom line. "First, it causes a person electrif'd to emit Fire from any part of the Body, so as to set Fire to Spirits of Wine> the Electric Spark is taken singly, or by the whole Company at once: Which was performed before the King and 180 of his Guards who all felt it at the same time." The Georgian period was the start of the popularisation of 'electric machines' which were starting to be used in medicine for the curing of all sorts of ills. However the spectacular aspect of this new branch of science was promoted by the upper classes who would hold soirées by practitioners in exchange for a share of the profits. This is a rare ticket for such a performance with the venue left blank.
