Title: [Plan Cadastral of the Land Outside the Fortifications.]
Description: 1686. Large hand coloured manuscript map of the outlying districts of the town of Veurne in the Flemish region of Belgium. 63 x 98 cm on thick paper, folded three times> some slight wear on the folds and a few small holes, not really affecting the image. An attractive and historically important manuscript map. Sebastian Le Prestre Vauban constructed very distinctive fortifications to the town in the latter half of the 17th Century> these can be seen in the Ferraris Map of the Austrian Netherlands [1770 - 78]. There is no sign of these fortifications here, merely the earlier surrounding city wall. There is a listing of landowners with map references as well as an outline border marked on the map. The speculation is that this could be a survey to identify landowners prior to the requisition of land in order to construct the series of star shaped and zigzag fortifications and may be one of the few records in existence of this earlier shape and ownership of the surrounding district. These fortifications were taken down in the late 18th Century by forces under Joseph II of Austria and only outline traces remain.
