Description: Barnet: Cowling Steam Printer, 1888. 2 single sheet posters, 440 x 285 mm and 415 x 260 mm, printed black on yellow and black on blue. In 1888 the non-resident Lord of the Manor of Chipping Barnet petitioned the Home Secretary to close Barnet Fair which had been running annually since being granted its Charter in 1588, but the request met little local support. Local solicitor W. Osborn Boys marshalled the defence and cross petitioned, pointing out that 40,000 cattle changed hands annually and that many local businesses were entirely dependent on the 3 day fair. The defence was successful and the tradesmen and licensed victuallers of the town presented him with a silver salver and testimonial, while the farmers gave him a superb chime clock and an address bearing the name of nearly every agriculturalist in the neighbourhood.
