Title: 1767 Venetian Government Order by the Podestra of Chioza
Description: Venice, Italy, 1767. Ephemera. On offer is a fine example of an order issued by a senior Venetian government official in the mid-18th century. The document was written in 1767 by Paolo Baglioni, the Podestra or Chief Magistrate of Chioza (modern-day Chioggii). Chioza dates back to the Roman times. The community lies on a small island at the south end of the Lagoon of Venice. Its existence has always been linked with Venice. For much of the Middle Ages, Chioza was under the rule of the Republic of Venice and has been referred to as “Little Venice” because of its canals. Venice had been an independent and very wealthy city from 687 AD until 1797 AD. Fishing was always part of the economy of Chioza but the city’s main economic activity became the salt trade. Our informal research has not found any additional information about the author of this note. The document does make reference to a “militia”. This small document measures 5.5 inches by 8.25 inches. It appears that it was part of a much longer, possibly 11.0 inch sheet of hand laid paper and the page was carefully cut in half. The page is in very good condition. The handwriting is tight but legible. The document is written in Italian. The page bears the crest of the Republic of Venice. For a historian interested in the vast and rich history of the Republic of Venice, this document offers an interesting step into that rich and powerful world. ; 5.5" x 8.25"; 1 pages. Good+ .
