Description: Perth, Printed by George Johnson for the Editor and Robert Morison Bookseller. 1774, Second Edition. Full-Leather, 8vo. Book measures 7 3/8 x 5 inches. Collation, 2 volumes bound in 1, xxii, [2], 261, [1]. 200 pp, large folding map. Bound in full calf. Rebacked, retaining the original boards, raised bands, leather title label. Minor wear to board edges. Binding in very good clean firm condition. Internally, map repaired, small stain mark to margin of 100 pages. Pages in very good condition throughout. Originally published in 1638, Adamson's Muses Threnodie was the first book to contain a reference to the game of golf, in two lines of a poem that read "and yee, my clubs, you must no more prepare/to make your bals flee whistling in the aire." This second edition, published almost 150 years later, contains a footnote to these two lines and a reference to playing golf at Perth, where Adamson was born. This is the variant with the title page only for the first volume, without a volume number. Scarce. A very nice copy, of a rare book. Very Good.
