Description: Richard Bentley,, 1856. 8vo., with engraved frontispiece (original tissue guard present), engraved and printed titles, frontispiece and titles minimally age-soiled; original green pebble-grain cloth, sides elaborately framed and blocked in blind, gilt back, primrose endpapers, uncut, corners just a fraction turned, tiny nick at tail of backstrip, joints tender (but binding entirely sound), a very good, bright, clean, crisp copy in wholly unrestored publisher's binding. Published as Volume 4 in Bentley's Standard Novels edition (series first issued in 1833; Gilson D4) but complete in itself. Complete with half-title to first work and separate printed title to second work. The frontispiece, by Greatbatch after Pickering, is still dated 1833 as is usual with SN reissues. Gilson notes that later issues 'generally dispense with the engraved title' (which is however present here) and that 'the volume numbers and the indication that this is a collected set appear only on the spines of the original cloth binding'. The present binding differs from Gilson's purple (he records green only for the original issues of 1833), but see his comment on D7 as a whole 'so few of these reprints survive in libraries, and even fewer in original condition, that the following details must be incomplete'.
