Description: York, R Sunter and London, John Weale 1843 9 panels mounted on folded cloth backing, many bw illustrations of details of church architecture. 14x10, card covers (cloth opens out to 40x28) Fair; covers rubbed and foxed, most panels browning, with edges slightly creased from the folds in the cloth. Extremely unusual and attractive little item, showing a chronology of English churches by period, from Saxon (coarse materials, 'rudest' workmanship) through the glories of Norman, Early English, Decorated, Perpendicular to the period starting in 1546 which is termed the 'Debased', when the 'loss of True Principles of Church Architecture led to...no fixed rule of architectural propriety whatsoever'.
