Description: Glasgow, printed by Edward Khull 1828 [4], 36pp, fold out map, 2 further plates, 38x24, half bound in red calf over marbled boards Calf and boards worn and rubbed, with some areas of loss, small areas at top and bottom of spine missing, eps foxed, one bookplate and two owners' signatures on ffep. Cleland was Superintendent of Public Works in Glasgow, and responsible for much of the early development of the modern city. In this case his recommendation that the coal seams under the Park at Glasgow Green should be exploited, with the funds used to support the creation of leisure grounds elsewhere, was rejected by the city Corporation. The bookplate is that of James Brown Montgomerie-Fleming - probably the older of a father and son of the same name. The father was responsible for the growth of the Kelvinside Estate Company which developed much of that area of the city.
