Author: ACT OF PARLIAMENT Title: An Act for building a Bridge cross the River of Thames from the Town of Fulham in the County of Middlesex, to the Town of Putney in the County of Surrey
Description: London, printed by John Baskett, Printer to the King's most Excellent Majesty, And Tho. Norris, Assignee to George Hills. 1726 [2], 643-662pp 32x21, disbound extract Edges browned and slightly chipped, very good thus for fragile item. The Fulham and Putney Bridge Act enabled the construction of the first Putney Bridge (also known as the Fulham Bridge). Rumour had it that the impetus for the Act came from Robert Walpole having been left standing on one bank of the river while the ferryman refused to come of the pub on the opposite bank to take him across. Whether there was truth in this or not, the fact that the bridge was on the route from Westminster to royal residences in Kingston and Richmond probably helped.
