Title: Report of the Royal Commission on the Means of Locomotion and Transport in London (Volume I) (Cd. 2597.)
Description: London, House of Commons 1905 x, 147pp, three large fold-out maps 34x22, half bound in calf over textured boards. Ex lib, with discreet stamps, calf on spine is in poor repair and splitting. The maps have been carefully mounted on stiff cloth, and are therefore in particularly good condition. The Royal Commission spent a number of years on its investigations, including several visits to cities in Europe and North America to see what other countries were doing to manage the problems that were bedevilling London. The eventual completed project runs to 8 Volumes in total, with the Report itself being Volume I, and containing a substantial number of detailed recommendations for improvements, and a new authority to put them into practice (this was not done - instead responsibility was given to a new London Traffic Branch of the Board of Trade). From 1908 annual reports were published by the London Traffic Branch, showing what progress had been made to implement the recommendations.
