Hearings held in the summer of 1805 into the Camberwell Waterworks Bill, a Private Members Bill to establish the South London Waterworks Company. The Committee heard from various objectors to the scheme, and from local residents wanting a better service than the current water company gave, and eventually resolved against the Bill. However the full House of Commons differed, and after a short delay, passed the Bill into law. One of the main objectors was the rival water company who saw a threat to their monopoly. The new company having made much of the benefits of competition in 1805, it was perhaps inevitable that the two companies were petitioning to merge 40 year later. The merged company was notorious for the worst water quality in London throughout much of the century.
