The Western end of the Strand and the streets off it are covered in this second of the three volumes on St Martin-In-The-Fields. This was the site of the great palaces on the banks of the Thames, such as Northumberland House, Norwich Inn (later York House), Durham Place and Carlisle Inn, and the houses and streets that subsequently replaced them. The Survey of London (Parish) series began in 1900 and 120 years later the 53rd volume was published. Much of the city remains to be covered.
