Title: Examples of the Municipal, Commercial, and Street Architecture of France and Italy from the 12th to the 15th Century.
Description: London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, William McKenzie 1868 103 plates, with c. 26 additional pages of explanatory text. 38x28, half bound in morocco, marbled boards, glt text and decoration, marbled endpapers. Spine rather rubbed, edges rubbed and worn, some browning to the title page, very good thus. Robert Rowland Anderson set up his practice in Edinburgh in 1860 while also working for the civilian service of the Royal Engineers, and gradually developed a practice specialising in both private and public buildings in Scotland, perhaps was perhaps perhaps best known for his work on the Catholic Apostolic Church in Edinburgh. By the end of his career he was lauded as one of Scotland's most important architects, because - or possibly despite - his displays of "awesome firmness on what he considered to be matters of principle." [ref Dictionary of Scottish Architects] The studies for this book date originally from tours of Europe taken around 1859 to 1862, and are based on both photographs and sketches taken during these travels. The Swedish architect Axel Herman Haig assisted in the final stages of assembling the materials for publication. [heavy item, may require additional postage]
