The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light bumping, rubbing and wear. There is a small edge tear to the bottom spine end. The covers have several spots of discoloration and there is a light, but noticeable spot of water damage to the top front cover. The text pages are clean and bright. This copy has been signed by Elizabeth Chamberlayne, a relation of the author. "John Hampden Chamberlayne (1838-1882) , son of Dr. Lewis Webb Chamberlayne and Martha Burwell (Dabney) Chamberlayne, was an artillery captain during the Civil War.
