Title: Ss Arcadian Mediterranean Cruise April 1928
Description: Unpublished ms. 1928. Hardcover. Book, SS Arcadian Mediterranean Cruise April 1928. A photographic record of the cruise of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company vessel SS Arcadian in a large leather album, size 39 by 31 cm. containing over 80 pictures. The ship visited Malta, Athens, Rhodes, Constantinople, Amalfi, Algiers and Tangier. The album contains a mixture of original and official photographs, the latter presumably provided by the company behind the cruise; the former original photos taken by passengers. There are 53 of these original photos, mainly of people and places en route (average image size 7 by 5 cm.); 22 small photographs (8.5 by 7 cm.) and another 22 larger photos (usually 16 by 10 cm.) seem to have been images provided by the travel company. These are mainly of places, buildings and other features. There are 6 large photographs and these are all scenes of architectural and historic interest. There is also one very large full-page photo of what appears to be some of the passengers in fancy dress. The album also has 3 pasted in programmes: for a fancy dress dance; for a centenary and carnival dinner, both with detailed menus, and for a mock horse race meeting. There are also 3 small loose folding programmes on card, daily programmes of events in an attractive art deco style; 3 other loose items: one a hand-made programme for a concert party with a performance by the Arcadians (possibly the people in the large photo); another for the Farewell Dinner, and a third for a sports and entertainment party which contains a list of names of some of the people on the ship. The album has 48 pages and 36 have been used. Some scuffing to the edges of the covers but all images and the album are in VG condition. Images available. Very Good.
