Published by Bradshaw Manchester 14th of January 1839. On folding linen in 49 sections size 163 by 103 cm. Scale approximately ten miles to the inch. With 33 gradient sections of the major lines and an inset map of the railways around London plus a decorative compass rose. Hand coloured. A large and detailed map of the railway network at the start of 1839. Folds into stiff cloth-covered boards with marbled endpapers. Bound complete with the Tables of the Gradients to Bradshaw's Map of the Railways containing particulars of the lengths levels and gradients of all of the principal railways of the kingdom a 26-page section of text and data with index. The front board has a gold-stamped title and decoration. Folds into decorated boards with gold-stamped title to front and spine. Original spine relaid. Slight offsetting below the title of the map. With the signature of J P Westhead of Manchester above the title in the printed tables section. Westhead was a prominent Manchester industrialist and local politician who served as a director of the London and North-Western Railway. VG condition. Images available.
