Title: The Controversial Appointment of James Mark Baldwin to the University of Toronto in 1889.
Description: 1980. Size (M.A. Thesis for Carleton University, 1980, supervised by Marilyn Marshall & Brian Laver. When the revered George Paxton Young died, the University of Toronto quickly sought a replacement for its one philosophy position. Through a Presbyterian connection some advocated the appointment of Baldwin from the US, whereas the Canada Firsters sought the hiring of Young's star student, James Gibson Hume. The appointment was debated at the university as well as in the local newspapers. In the end both Baldwin & Hume were hired, the latter not arriving until two years later. Baldwin stayed for four productive years, but very limited resources was very frustrating & he was attracted back to Princeton.)
