Dark brown cloth with gold lettering on brown leather spine with four raised nerves except on slightly taller volume four, covers scuffed, most spine ends worn & frayed up to 1/4 inch except upper spine end of volume four partly chipped one inch not affecting lettering, most corners very worn through leather, page ends browned, lower page ends worn, end papers generally good though some very browned, smudged & spotted, pages generally intact though brown spotted & occasionally smudged, one plate in volume one torn out & edges of two others with large chips & fraying affecting outer portion of some illustrations & text, edges of two sheets at end very frayed but intact, initial pages of volume three very frayed but not affecting text, a few frayed edges in volumes four, copies with tight bindings, all existing pages attached, & external leather refurbished, Reading Copy
