Born in 1899 Alfred Thompson Denning was a brilliant student, Eldon Scholar and Prize Student at the Inns of Court, and was called to the bar in 1923, becoming a King's Counsel 15 years later. In 1944 he was knighted and appointed a High Court Judge. He became a Lord Justice of Appeal and a Privy Councillor in 1948. Created a life peer in 1957, he took the title Baron Denning of Whitchurch and in the same year was appointed Lord of Appeal in Ordinary.
