Title: The Fables of Aesop
Description: New York, Gramercy. 1994, First Thus. (ISBN: 0517100835). Hard Cover, 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Ill.: Detmold, Edward J. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket Aesop is said to have been a Phrygian slave who lived around 570 B.C. Some of his tales are believed to have been turned into verse by Socrates during his imprisonment and, later, in the second century A.D. by the Greek poet Babrius. In this form the fables were all well known in the Middle Ages. This edition was first published in 1909, and includes 23 of Edward Detmold's beautiful animal paintings as well as many of his black-and-white drawings and more than 300 of Aesop's very wise tales. Edward J. Detmold, who was born in 1883, was one of England's greatest book illustrators and with his twin brother Charles Maurice were drawing the animals in Regents Park Zoo and the Natural History Museum and at the age of 13 were the youngest artists ever to exhibit their work at the Royal Academy. 22. Fine/Fine.
