Description: London, George G. Harrap. Hard Cover, 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. Gilt titles on blue cloth boards which have wear to spine sides, head and tail. Internally there is a little age toning to endpapers else a clean, tight unmarked copy. Engraved frontispiece tissue guarded. Comprises Rab and His Friends - a simple story which includes an insight into how John Brown's teacher and employer, Doctor James Syme, taught and operated. The other main characters are Rab, a ferocious mastiff dog, his owner, James Noble, a carter or carrier by trade, and the carter's ailing wife Ailie. Set in Edinburgh in the 1830s, the story begins with a fight between Rab and a bull terrier which Brown, the narrator, watches as a teenage boy. Marjorie Fleming (180-1811) is an essay on the child prodigy - a writer and poet, referred originally as 'pet' Marjorie being the'pet' of Sir Walter Scott. 11. Very Good/No Jacket.
