It triggered a sequence of meetings over four years in which, playing Boswell to Runcie's Johnson, Carpenter reveals the man behind the office and, through many focuses, draws a picture of an archbishop grappling with eventful times for the relations of Church to state. Runcie's archbishopric saw the first visit of a Pope to British soil, the Falklands War, and his own peace envoy, Terry Waite, being taken hostage in Beirut.
