Drag is a theatrical term. It means women's clothes worn by men. And men have dragged their skirts across the stage since the beginnings of the theatre. In the playhouses of ancient China, Japan, Greece and in medieval England, theheroines were always young men. Sooner or later, however, womenexerted themselves and managed to appropriate the centre of the stage. In China it was not until the 20th century that this happened. In England it followed the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660. After that date, female impersonation in this country became a curiosity, a cue for comedy. For the first time the complexities of this extraordinary branch of theatrical technique are fully explored. 24. Very Good/Good.
