Title: Ugly
Description: London, Hodder and Stoughton. 2006, First Edition. (ISBN: 0340895977). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. First edition, First printing. The author practises as a barrister and in 1996 became a part-time judge - one of the first black women to sit as a judge in the UK. Her mother systematically abused her, both physically and emotionally, throughout her childhood. Regularly beaten and starved, she was so desperate that she took herself off to Social Services and tried to get into care. When that failed, she swallowed bleach 'because it kills all known germs and my mother always told me I was a germ'. When Constance was 13, her mother simply moved out, leaving her daughter to fend for herself - there was no gas, no electricity and no food. But somehow she found the courage to survive her terrible start in life and this is her heartrending - and ultimately triumphant - story. 16. Fine/Near Fine.
