Translated from the Italian and French by Teresa Waugh. Marie Anne de Vichy-Chamrond, marquise du Deffand (1697-1780) was a famous hostess and patron of the arts. Her salon members were drawn from aristocratic society more than from literary circles, but did include Voltaire, Montesquieu, Fontenelle, Madame de Staal-Delaunay, and D'Alembert. After her return to Paris, at the insistence of friends, she engaged Mademoiselle de Lespinasse to help her in entertaining, but Lespinasse was later dismissed as she had become more popular than her patron with some guests.
