Title: The Last Fighting Tommy - the Life of Harry Patch, the Oldest Surviving Veteran of the Trenches
Description: London, Bloomsbury. 2007. (ISBN: 9780747591153). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. 238 pages. 3 maps and 39 illustrations. Harry Patch (1898-2009) was the last surviving soldier to have fought in the trenches of the First World War, and was one of the very few who could directly recall the horror of that conflict. In the book he vividly remembers his childhood in the Somerset countryside of Edwardian England, his apprenticeship as a plumber at fourteen, then three years later was conscripted, serving as a machine gunner in the Duke of Corneall's Light Infantry. Fighting in the mud and trenches during the Battle of Paschendaele, he saw a great many of his comrades die, and in one dreadful moment the shell that wounded him killed his three closest friends. 12. Fine/Fine.
