Arriving in the Congo in 1953, Dr. Helen Roseveare started her own hospital and medical centre from a disused leper colony, and set up clinics in lonely villages. During the crises in 1960 and 1964, she refused to leave the country, although many of her friends and colleagues had been brutally slaughtered. The most astounding part of her story is that, having endured terror, humiliation, rape and split-second escape from death, she would , after a few months back home in England, choose to return to resume her work in the Congo. Today, the central station she founded, with its flying doctors, teaching school and operating theatres, is unique in Africa. NOT EX LIB 21. Very Good/Good.
