A Fine copy but with an inscription of name and date to front endpaper with near Fine dustjacket. Foreword by Robert Runcie. When Jane Bown left the WRNS and started on a photography course at Guildford, she took her first ever photograph - of a church door. Later when The Observer decided to follow Picture Post's example by taking photography seriously, she was recommended to David Astor and was taken on by Mechtild Nawiasky. Her first task was Bertrand Russell, and since then has photographed everyone in the news, and many of these photographs are in this book from eminent churchmen to Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Alongside them are the pictures from her own village, from her time spent in retreat, at family and village baptisms, weddings and funerals. R1. Fine/Near Fine.
