Description: London, Hamish Hamilton. 1967. Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. SIGNED BY AUTHOR on front endpaper with year. Silver title on blue boards which are very clean and unmarked with no wear. Internally very clean, tight and unmarked apart from a small old price (20/-) written on front endpaper. A Very Good+ copy. Dustjacket with design by Charles Mozley has some light foxing, hardly any wear and is not price clipped. Second impression (first was also 1967). A novel of moral dilemmas, where the British Administrator of a decaying Caribbean island is under pressure from the Government to authorise a development scheme promoted by a syndicate of U.S. gamblers. Sympathetic to the islanders' wish to preserve their simple, religious society, the Administrator soon finds himself in conflict with the visiting Minister of State. The author evokes all of the contradictions of the Caribbean - turquoise skies and hurricanes, placid seas and the monsters beneath them, simple faith, hot-gospellers, buccaneers, missionaries, luxury clubs, hungry children, sophistication and primitive reversions and voodoo. 1. Very Good/Very Good. Signed by Author.
