A novel of moral dilemmas, where the British Administrator of a decaying Caribbean island is under pressure from the Government to authorise a development scheme promoted by a syndicate of U.S. gamblers. Sympathetic to the islanders' wish to preserve their simple, religious society, the Administrator soon finds himself in conflict with the visiting Minister of State. The author evokes all of the contradictions of the Caribbean - turquoise skies and hurricanes, placid seas and the monsters beneath them, simple faith, hot-gospellers, buccaneers, missionaries, luxury clubs, hungry children, sophistication and primitive reversions and voodoo. 1.
