In 1955 he went to India, where he built up a thriving spiritual community at Shantivanam in Tamil Nadu. Regarded by many as a prophet, a sage, a mystic, even a saint, he both loved the Church and was deeply critical of it, and was open to all paths by which people seek God, whether through the universal tradition known as the 'perennial philosophy', the Buddhist teaching of Dzogehen or esoteric practices such as the Tarot.
