For Joe Burkinshaw there was no choice, at the age of seven he had to join his brother working in the coal mine with no hope of escaping from the darkness, the toil and the danger and through the years of unhappiness during which he sees his brother killed and his mother crippled, he sets his mind on becoming free. Through an accident he finds himself bound as a servant to the mine owner but he flees and goes to Sheffield where he is press ganged into work at a steel works, then he flees again and ends up with a hermit and they live by poaching.
