Gilt signature of Balzac on front cover with gilt decoration and title to spine on green cloth boards which have wear to spine head and tail and to corner tips, fading to spine with some marks to front. Internally there is a contemporary signarure and date to front endpaper, age darkening to endpapers and some staing to the margins of some pages. lix + 288 pages. Fore and lower edges uncut. Top edge gilt. Two tissue protected engravings by W. Boucher and a photogravure portrait of Balzac by H. Crickmore. Fourth edition printed August 1903. Translated by Ellen Marriage with a preface by George Saintsbury. Uniform with Dent's series of the Comedie Humaine. Despite its faults it is a good reading copy well translated. C3A.
