Title: The Costumes of the Members of the University of Cambridge
Description: London, N Whittock. 1850, First Edition. Red Cloth, Gilt, 130mm. x 85mm. Book, Small hardback bound in red textured cloth with decorative gilt title to upper board and blind-embossed decoration to boards. 24 fold-out concertina pages, attached to rear pastedown, printed in one long panorama. Engraved title page, 45 hand-coloured engraved illustrations of the costumes for Cambridge University, from Pensioner to Chancellor. Undated but c1850, as the illustration of Chancellor bears a striking resmblance to Albert, the Prince Consort, who was elected Chancellor in 1847, and served till his death. The publisher Nathaniel Whittock (1791-1860), was active at 34 Richard Street, Islington, at this time, and was succeeded by his cousin, Henry Hyde, who published a later edition, under his own imprint, from the same address. Some bumping, wear to covers, contemporary Cambridge ownership inscription, dated 1850, to front pastedown, some splitting to inner hinge of front pastedown, A very good copy of a scarce item. Size 130mm. x 85mm. [15890/638]. Very Good.
