WWI Camp Sherman Chilicothe, Ohio Postcards (Nine Views)
, . Very Good/, Beautiful set of postcards -- nine in all, showing U.S. military at work and play while training at Camp Sherman in Chillicothe, Ohio in preparation for overseas duty in WWI. Camp Sherman was the third largest of the training facilities built by the government in 1917 after the U.S. entered WWI. Shortly after completion it housed 40,000 trainees. By the time it closed it had trained the 83rd and 84th divisions, both of which did overseas duty, and the 95th and 96th, which did not, due to the end of the war.The war ended in 1918 and for a short while the camp was still used to train veterans for a trade so they could enter the job market, but it soon was dismantled. Today it's only a memory, as the grounds have become the site of the Chillicothe Correctional Institute.Five cards are labeled Greetings From Camp Sherman, Chillicothe, Ohio; On the Hike, After the Hike, Instructing Company, Company Orchestra and Rifle Drill. The remaining four do not bear the Camp Sherman name, but rather, show the logo of the YMCA, which research shows, had a presence at the camp during this period. These cards are labeled Singing Sammies, Boxing For Fun and Efficiency, Volley Ball -- A Popular Army Game, and Movies -- Always Popular. All nine cards are unused, clean, and well-kept. A few show small corner wear and there is a light crease to one and a corner crease to another. Overall though, they are a great set for the WWI or Ohioana collector. Photos available upon request.
