New York:, 1918., Periodical, Hardcover. Hardback small folio in quarter brown buckram stamped in gilt. A bound set of the weekly magazine covering particularly World War I. The appealing cover art by major illustrators of the day is the main attraction: Flagg, Orson Lowell, Clyde Forsythe (including a fabulous Uncle Sam about to slug a baseball with the image of the Kaiser on it), an early Norman Rockwell with a soldier watering tulips out of his helmet. The back page color ads are also quite good, the most interesting a Murad Cigarette ad with a poem by Corporal Jack Turner, entitled 'Fags', extolling the virtues of a cigarette at critical times. The covers are moderately worn, with corners rounded, scuffing. The front hinge is quite shaken and the cover of the initial issue, a Flagg with Uncle Sam being driven by Liberty in an early automobile, is very nearly detached. Each cover has the address stamp of the recipient, and the entire volume appears to be trimmed at the bottom (and perhaps the top) without affecting images. Very good minus (for binding problems).
