Description: Printed for S. Bladon. London. 1768. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. 8vo. (8.1 x 5.2 inches). iv, viii, 172pp. Complete copy in contemporary full tan calf binding. Raised bands. Red title label, ruled and lettered in gilt. Rubbing and wear to the edges. Front board with thin strip of the leather missing from bottom outer corner, exposing the board beneath. Internally a clean and tight copy of this scarce satirical work. Housed in a green cloth covered clam shell case, with dark green leather label to spine, lettered in gilt. Published in French the previous year, this anonymous translation does not appear to have been reprinted in England after this edition. Writing as the nephew of the late Abbe Bazing(sic), Voltaire defends his Philosophie de l'Histoire, published in 1765, against what he considers libels from Pierre Larcher in his supplement to the work. The book includes chapters on such diverse subjects as The Chinese, India, The Alcoran, Men of different colours, Sodomy, Bestiality, & Incest.
