Title: THE SECRET CARNIVAL. A Pop-up book.
Description: Hobart and Maclean. London. 1988. LIMITED EDITION. 4to. (12.3 x 8.3 inches). One of 20 de luxe copies, this number 13, signed and with an original watercolour by the artist loosely inserted and bound in red, from a total edition of 320 copies, the remaining 300 being bound in green. Double page full colour title and endpaper, plus six erotic double page movable pop-ups, printed on stiff card and all hand coloured. Text printed in black. Original full red cloth binding with printed colour plates mounted onto both boards. Spine lettered in gilt. Original slip with instructions for care of the book. A fine copy. ------ The Pop-ups were all assembled by hand, and the illustrations hand coloured by hired groups of art students. These same publishers also started the Erotic print society and Erotic Review. Talking about this, the Publishers first title, James Maclean described production problems for "the only explicitly erotic pop-up book ever made .... a wicked expose of decadent fun at the Venice Carnival". "It was a nightmare. There were 13 pop-up penises in each of the 320 copies - 4,160 in all - that had to be glued in by hand. We had to hire teams of art students to do it. Most were women. No, they did not mind. They were paid quite well." .
