Title: A DAY IN THE LIFE OF IVAN DENISOVICH. (Russian text). Один день Ивана Денисовича.
Description: Moscow: Sovetskii Pisatel. 1963. FIRST BOOK EDITION. The author's first published work. Small 8vo. (6.5 x 5.3 inches). 144pp. Inscribed by the Author to Viktor Georgievitch Sentsov (or Victor Georgievich Sektsov ? ) on the title page, dated 2006. Previous owners name, dated March 1963, written on the first page. Publishers original printed fawn paper wraps. A little rubbing and creasing to the edges but overall this is a very good copy of this scarce and fragile production, the Nobel prize winning author's first book. ------------ First serialised in the literary magazine Novy Mir in November 1962, the work had the support of Nikita Krushchev, which allowed this edition to be published and become a big success, although this support disappeared with Krushchev's fall from power in 1964 and publication of Solzhenitsyn's writings in the USSR stopped. Awarded the Nobel prize in Literature in 1970, Solzhenitsyn feared that if he attended the award ceremony in Sweden he would not be allowed back home afterwards and didn't collect his prize until 1974, after his expulsion from the Soviet Union.
